Judy Vanderspool moved with her husband, Ray, to Huntington in 1964 due to his transfer with Memcor. A former teacher in the Chicago area, she raised three children, Jeanette, Mike & Amy, until the Association for Retarded Children (now Pathfinder Services) hired her to teach their preschool class in 1972. Returning to college to get her master’s degree, she eventually taught Special Education in the Huntington County Schools.
She was the first recipient of Pathfinders’ Herbert LaMont Award in 1986. Serving on its Board and Foundation, she now serves on its Human Rights Committee. After the death of her first husband, she met and fell in love again with Dr. Ron Frischman, a chiropractor from Wabash. The two were married in 1998 when Ms. Frischman retired from teaching. She continues to support non-profits in Huntington County as a board member of HELP and YSB (Youth Services Bureau).
During her years of teaching, her classes were so enriched by the community of Huntington as far as materials, donations for trips and support that establishing this fund with the Huntington County Community Foundation is her way of giving back to those also working with the developmentally challenged. The fund will make Classroom Education grants available to Huntington County Teachers, with priority given to projects that benefit students with special needs from preschool through high school.
Grants from the Vanderspool-Frischman Fund will be made available through the Classroom Education Grant application process. Huntington County Educators are encouraged to apply through our online portal at huntingtonccf.org/classroom. The application will open on August 1st. The deadline is September 30th.
We are always happy to help community members like Judy establish funds for causes that they are passionate about. Donors are satisfied knowing that these funds can impact generations to come through the endowment process. Please contact our office if you are interested in establishing a fund to honor a loved one or support a worthy cause.
