Bergman’s Legacy in Warren Includes Annual Scholarship

Since 1841, the Glancy-H. Brown & Son Funeral Home has been serving the Warren, IN community making it one of the oldest continuously operated funeral homes in Indiana and the oldest continuously operated business in Huntington County. George & Garnet Bergman were the fifth generation of the Brown family to operate the Funeral Home taking the reins in 1949 and running the business until the 1990s.

Late in 2000, George and HCCF came to an agreement to create a scholarship from the proceeds of George’s individual retirement account after his passing. The scholarship was set-up to provide financial aid for students residing in the Warren, IN area who have graduated from Huntington North High School, Southern Wells High School, or Eastbrook High School and are seeking to continue their education and training.

George held memberships in the Indiana Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, and Warren Chamber of Commerce among other organizations. In addition, he was a charter member of the Warren Kiwanis Club, a life member of the Warren Sportsman’s Club, a chaplain for the Warren Masonic Lodge 246 and a former Boy Scout scoutmaster. He also operated an emergency ambulance service for Huntington and surrounding counties until the service was discontinued in 1973. He passed away on September 29, 2002 at the age of 84.

Garnet worked for 40 years as an office manager in the personnel and credit departments of Sears in Marion. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Warren, Business & Professional Women in Marion, Associate Tri Kappa Sorority and Floral Chapter 75 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Huntington. She passed away on April 21, 1998 at the age of 78.

Fifteen years after their passings, the Bergmans We congratulate Paige Coolman, Johnna Cummins, Kaitlyn Drayer, Kaitlin Jones, Austin Rosen, Connor Sabinske, Spencer Sharpe, and Sophia Smekens for being this year’s class of Bergman scholars!
