J. Edward & Polly Roush

In June of 1997, local attorney Stanley Mathney made a decision to honor  two of his close friends, J. Edward and Polly Roush, by establishing a scholarship in their name. At the time, Polly was influential in raising money to increase the scholarship funds available for Huntington County residents attending Huntington University (then Huntington College). In conjunction with Huntington University’s Centennial celebration, Mathney helped this cause by creating the J. Edward & Polly Roush Scholarship to award scholarships to Huntington County residents attending Huntington University.

J. Edward was a long serving U.S. Representative from Indiana in the U.S. Congress from 1959 to 1969 and from 1971 to 1977.  Prior to his service as a Representative, he served as prosecuting attorney of Huntington County from 1954 to 1958. Among some of his greatest achievements, he was known as the father of the nationwide 911 emergency system. J. Edward passed away on March 26, 2004 at age 83.

A passionate supporter of Huntington University, Polly was awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree for her longtime volunteerism both to the college and the community. She was a long-time teacher for the Huntington County Community School Corporation and was known for enthusiasm and leadership. In her memorial, she was described as someone who “will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her passion for music and her green thumb.” Polly passed away on July 12, 2008 at age 86.
