HCCF Announces the Creation of Regan Scholarship

The Huntington County Community Foundation is honored to announce the recent creation of the Delene Anne Regan Valedictorian Scholarship.

The scholarship honors the pursuit of academic excellence and the memory of Delene Anne Regan, Valedictorian of the Huntington High School Class of 1953.

Delene attended Indiana University Bloomington where she graduated with high scholastic honors. She was a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Beta Gamma Sigma scholastic honoraries. The Beta Gamma Sigma honorary represents the top ten percent of students in the IU School of Business. She received one of four Keys presented to that group her senior year, representing top achievement in the Business School.

Her meticulous class notes on 1 inch by 1 inch notepads were legendary as were her notes in shorthand for anyone trying to borrow them just before final exams.

While at IU, she belonged to Kappa Kappa Gamma Social Sorority and also studied organ at the Indiana University School of Music. Even in high school, she enjoyed playing the organ at weekly church services.

In 1958, she married Huntington dentist, Dr. John E. Regan, and they had eight children who each had outstanding scholastic records. Dr. Regan always claimed the children received their brains from their mother because he still had his!

After a 16-year battle, breast cancer took from us a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a flower planter extraordinaire and an unpretentious, humble, fun loving friend to anyone lucky enough to know her. However, the bluegills in Birchwood, Wisconsin, and the walleyes in Sioux Lookout, Ontario can all feel safer.

This year’s inaugural recipients of the Delene Anne Regan Valedictorian Scholarship are Huntington North High School co-valedictorians Rileigh Johnson and Audrey Marjamaa. Each student will be awarded $250 in financial aid assistance for their freshman collegiate year.
