Sumner B. Sheets was a lifelong resident of Huntington County who was a farmer and raised hogs for a living. Beginning in 1961, Sheets traveled the world extensively on hunting and fishing expeditions and donated his entire wildlife collection to Huntington County. He authored the book “No Turning Back” which documents his life’s adventures.

The Sumner B. Sheets Memorial Scholarship was established in 2023 by Sumner’s daughter, Brenda Knepper, who says, “I was blessed to be born into a farm family. I learned the value of hard work and that we are all stewards of planet Earth.  I was encouraged to get a good education, and now I honor these values by helping others pursue their studies.”

“The Sheets name is well-known in Huntington County,” says Matt Ditzler, Community Foundation Executive Director. “We are honored to have the opportunity to preserve the Sheets family’s charitable wishes in perpetuity.” The Sumner B. Sheets Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to students who are residents of Huntington County and are pursuing a career related to agriculture, animal sciences, or natural resources.   Students are encouraged to apply for this and dozens of other scholarships on through our website.
